How It Works in the Classroom

Daily "News of the Day" Format (10 Minutes)

Step 1: Establish a Ritual Start 2-3 times weekly with "News of the Day." Students will anticipate this engaging routine.

Step 2: Read the News

  • Read aloud to class

  • Invite student volunteers (rotating)

  • Allow 2 minutes for independent reading

Step 3: Present the Discussion Question Share the question that follows each story.

Step 4: Facilitate Discussion Multiple formats work:

  • Oral discussion — 3-4 students share perspectives

  • Think-Pair-Share — individual thinking → partner discussion → class sharing

  • Written response — journal entries or exit tickets

  • Voting — for questions involving choices

Step 5: Synthesize Ideas Emphasize that different viewpoints are valuable. Highlight thoughtful reasoning and respectful disagreement.
